Reporting Surface Profile using Cloud to Cad Best Fit

Post by C2CGDT » Wed Aug 29, 2018 7:47 pm

If I need to report a Surface profile .020 to ABC of a feature, using cloud to cad deviation, and want to use the Best Fit option. Do I need to lock translation and rotation in X, Y, Z, axis that apply?

Is there a tutorial explaining this feature?

If your profile is called to a ABC, you do not want to use best-fit, which would free up one or more of the constraining datums.

For example, if -A- is a planar surface in the Z+ direction and your profile call was to -B- and -C-, then you could select the best fit option and lock the X-translation, Y-Translation and Z-Rotation, because that is what -B- and -C- are constraining. You would then be allowing the freedoms that are only tied to -A-.

We have a (usually) weekly web demo that covers this functionality. It can be registered for at https://www.cmmmanager.com/demo/ if you are interested in seeing this done.

How to: Report Profile using Cloud to CAD Deviation

Ask and you shall receive. Here is a quick tutorial describing the procedure for reporting profile of surface using Cloud to CAD Comparison. I give two examples... One with Profile to A,B,C and another with Profile only to A & C.

profile_ABC.jpg

From the Report Cloud to CAD operation you can use the Best-Fit Clouds to CAD check-box and Lock check-boxes to release constraints according to the Feature Control Frame specified on drawing. For the example here we do not use best-fit for Profile to A,B & C... However, we do use Best-Fit option and un-check the X axis Lock check-box to release constraint of B Datum. Notice that B Datum is constraining X Axis translation, thus the reason that X Axis lock is un-checked. Additional note - The 3D tolerance is optional for reporting Profile, however please note that 3D tolerance will be used for Spike and Disc tolerance on graphical Report. You may set this tolerance even through the check-box is not checked.

When the X axis translation is unlocked the data points are best-fit to nominal CAD surface. The best-fit is limited to translation in X axis only. The release of this extra constraint yields a pass condition vs. the failed condition with all three Datums (A,B,C) Also notice that the Report best-fit xForm check-box is checked. This will provide additional report info that describes the translation and rotation used to achieve best-fit report. In this case the X Axis (0,01 vector) has been shifted by 0.064 mm according to report. This information is shown in the Transformation section of report.
