distance between two cylinder with Normal (Parallel) Dist

Post by enpalani » Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:05 am

If we report distance between two cylinder with Normal (Parallel) Dist option, where is the distance calculate in two diff. cylinder?.

Case 1: If two cylinder is perfect parallel, results will same in whole cylinder.

Case 2: If two cylinder is not perfect parallel (slight variation ex: 0.2mm parallelism), results will not same in whole cylinder.

where is the distance calculate in two diff. cylinder in above option?.

Kindly clarify.

The option is mainly for two lines that are not on the same plane:
- “Normal Dist”: it will calculate the shortest distance between the two lines
- “Normal (parallel) Dist”: it will calculate the distance as if the two lines are parallel

When two cylinders are not perfectly parallel, the calculation is done this way:
1. Take center point of cylinder axis 1, and calculate the distance from it to cylinder axis 2
2. Take center point of cylinder axis 2, and calculate the distance from it to cylinder axis 1
3. Average the two distances to get the final result
